More About our Work
About ASTA
ASTA is a non-profit and all-volunteer led organization that is organized exclusively for charitable and educational purposes under Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code. We cannot accomplish our mission and goals without the support of the local community and business organizations.
Our Mission
ASTA works to provide pathways for outdoor recreation that promote healthy lifestyles, connect outdoor enthusiasts with nature and contribute to the economic vitality of our local community.
Our Goals
Our goals are to create, maintain and advocate for safe, accessible, and scenic trails that connect our community, protect nature, and inspire adventure. We believe that our trails are a vital resource for physical activity, social interaction, environmental education, and stewardship in addition to supporting our local economy and businesses.
Our Projects
ASTA helps to maintain the Mountains to Sea Trail (MST) and the Sparta Trail connector in the county and we conduct community hikes. We published an Alleghany County trail brochure and maintain a local trail inventory on our website. ASTA participated in a walk audit for the Town of Sparta and we plan to participate in further development of Sam Brown Park, the Sparta Greenway and other trail development for the county. ASTA also plans to help initiate a hiking club for the Alleghany County High School.
Choose Your Corporate Support Level
Our membership levels are inspired by native tree species that faced near extinction due to environmental challenges in our region. When you join at any level, a part of your donation goes towards supporting forest conservation efforts.
