Paddling Trails
New River is designated a National Wild and Scenic River and is one of the oldest rivers in the world. Alleghany County is home to miles of scenic hillsides, pastoral meadows, and rolling farmlands that surround the oldest river in North America.
New River State Park
New River State Park is just a few miles from the Alleghany County line on US Highway 221 in Ashe County and provides river access and spots for camping, picnics, and fishing. The river's waters are slow and placid; its banks are fertile and covered with trees, shrubs, and wildflowers. Fishing is good along the river. Narrow and winding mountain roads dotted with small farms, churches, and country stores give our area an old-fashioned charm. More information can be accessed on the NC State Parks website.
