Leave No Trace
Help Protect the Places We Love
The forests, rivers, mountain vistas, and trails of Alleghany County are part of what makes our community so special. Whether you're visiting for the first time or exploring your favorite local trail, every outdoor adventure is an opportunity to care for the places we share.
The Leave No Trace Seven Principles are simple guidelines that help protect nature while ensuring that everyone can enjoy the outdoors for years to come. By making thoughtful choices, each of us can help preserve the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains for future generations.

The Seven Leave No Trace Principles
These seven simple principles help minimize our impact on the outdoors while protecting the trails, forests, rivers, and wildlife that make the Blue Ridge Mountains so special.
1. Plan Ahead and Prepare
Know where you're going before you head out. Check weather conditions, trail information, and any regulations or closures. Bring plenty of water, wear appropriate clothing, and let someone know your plans if you'll be hiking in remote areas.
2. Stay on Durable Surfaces
Whenever possible, stay on marked trails, boardwalks, or other durable surfaces. Cutting switchbacks or creating new paths can damage fragile plants and contribute to erosion.
3. Dispose of Waste Properly
Pack out everything you bring with you—including food wrappers, bottles, and other trash. If there are no trash receptacles, take your waste home. Always clean up after pets.
4. Leave What You Find
Take photos and memories, but leave wildflowers, rocks, historic artifacts, and other natural or cultural features where you found them. Help preserve these places for everyone who visits after you.
5. Minimize Fire Impacts
Use established fire rings where fires are permitted, and always follow local fire restrictions. Keep fires small, burn only appropriate wood, and make sure every fire is completely extinguished before leaving. Better yet, consider using a camp stove when possible.
6. Respect Wildlife
Observe animals from a distance and never feed them. Feeding wildlife changes natural behaviors and can be harmful to both animals and people. Give wildlife plenty of space, especially during nesting and breeding seasons.
7. Be Considerate of Others
Share the trail with courtesy and kindness. Yield appropriately to other trail users, keep noise levels low so everyone can enjoy the sounds of nature, and help create a welcoming experience for visitors of all ages and abilities.
The Alleghany Sparta Trail Association believes that caring for our trails is a shared responsibility. Every visitor has the power to make a positive impact through small, thoughtful actions.
Together, we can help preserve the spaces and experiences that make Alleghany County such a remarkable place to explore. Thank you for doing your part to protect the places we all love.
